Dakar Classic

What is Dakar Classic?

The Dakar Classic event is a regularity and navigation race held in parallel with the Dakar
Rally, organized by A.S.O. (Amaury Sport Organisation) from France. As opposed to the Dakar Rally, where the fastest crew wins, in Dakar Classic it’s not about being the fastest, but rather being closest to the time allocated for the stage by the organizers, therefore a test of punctuality and navigation.
Dakar Classis competitors share the same bivouac and transfer with Dakar Rally, but the route is different.

Competitors will be subject to :

  • Regularity Test (RTs) where participants have to follow the established
average speed and stay close to the ideal time throughout the route.
  • Navigation Test (NTs) where participants have to follow the official itinerary and validate all the Waypoints on the course while seeking to cover as few kilometres as possible without exceeding the time limit.

    Separated Classification :
  • Dunes Test (DTs) where participants have to validate waypoints. Mandatory for H2
    & H3 group. Optional for H0 & H1

Each stage may consist of several RTs, NTs or DTs. The details of the itinerary and the various controls and transfers shall be set out in the time card handed out to the crews at the TC start of each stage.

Penalties shall be handed down as points and there are penalties for speeding (for road sections also monetary penalty applies), overlimit kilometers and more. During RT maximum speed is limited to 140km/h for cars and 120km/h for trucks.

The winner shall be the competitor with the fewest points at the end of the rally.

Should a Crew be unable to complete a Leg on their own, they may continue the Rally in the remaining Legs after carrying out the necessary repairs. However, they shall receive the maximum penalties for each skipped TC/CP/RT/NT/DT(H2,H3.

Who can compete?

The crews shall be composed of 2 members (driver and co-driver) and 2 or 3 members for trucks (driver, co-driver [and mechanic]).

Each crew member require:
• 18+ years of age
• Hold a valid driving licence for his or her vehicle category
• Hold a Driver/Entrant International licence valid for participating in an international regularity race.

Only the crews stated on the registration form shall be admitted to the start of the race. The absence of any crew member or the presence of any additional people on board shall lead to Disqualification.

How many days does the Dakar Classic last?

Dakar Classic event occurs at the same time as Dakar Rally, in January each year, currently in Saudi Arabia and lasts for about 3 weeks.

How to enter?

To enter Dakar Classic you need to register an account and apply. After your application is confirmed, you need to pay the entry fee in the amounts and timelines as shown here.

Which categories are available in Dakar Classic?

Vehicles are categorised by their period as follows:
Period A – Vehicles produced before 01/01/1986
Period B – Vehicles produced from 01/01/1986 to 31/12/1996
Period C – Vehicles produced from 01/01/1997 to31/12/1999

Then devided into 4 groups:
• GROUP H0 – LOW AVERAGE SPEED (average speeds dedicated to the less
powerful vehicle – No turbo engine allowed – not accessible for period C
cars)
• GROUP H1 – MODERATE AVERAGE SPEED (average speeds accessible to
all, ideal for the less powerful cars – not accessible for period C cars except
for Leaf springs vehicles)
• GROUP H2 – INTERMEDIATE AVERAGE SPEED (10% to 15% higher average
speeds)
• GROUP H3 – HIGH AVERAGE SPEED (faster average speeds, 25% to 35%
higher average speeds – not accessible for Period A cars)

What do I need to compete in Dakar Classic?

There are several things you need to consider when attending the Dakar Classic, depending on what you already have, but here is a brief overview on requirements:

– Service crew (mechanics, engineer)
– Coordinator (for all documentation and communication with race officials)
– Service truck with spares and tools
– Spare parts based on maintenance plan + extras for damages
– Tires
– Car
– Assistance truck
– Fuel
– Navigation equipment, satellite communication
– Camper or a tent
– Flights to and from race
– Insurance for the car
– Personal safety equipment (helmet, overall, shoes…)

Based on the regulations, each vehicle shall carry:

  • An easily accessible medical kit (refer to FIA Technical List No. 83 —
    www.competitors.dakar.com)
A survival kit containing the following items:
  • 1 reflective triangle
  • seat belt cutters accessible when belted into the seat
  • 2 motorcycle or working goggles (with a soft edge
    to the face)
  • 2 safety vests
  • 1 safety light
  • 1 × 9 m towing belt
  • warm clothes and shoes
  • 1.5 litres of non-alcoholic beverages per person accessible when belted into the seat
  • 1 hand shovel
  • 2 sand ladders
  • a minimum of 2 spare wheels
  • survival food supplies (e.g. PowerBar or similar)
-a reserve of 5 litres of drinking water

How much does it cost to compete in Dakar Classic?

First you need to pay an entry fee, which for cars is set at 18.000 EUR and trucks at 23.000 EUR (for 2024 edition).

The entry fee includes:
• Boat trips for the vehicles from Europe to Saudi Arabia and from Saudi Arabia back to Europe
(the ports will be announced later)
• Sporting rights
• Medical assistance
• Food and beverages at the bivouacs and the rations
• Insurance, which includes civil liability motor insurance valid along the entire route as well as
medical repatriation insurance
• GPS Tripy rental
• IriTrack satellite tracking system rental
• Refuelling for competitors during the race is at the charge of the organizer
• The eco contribution
• Visa charges

THESE FEES DO NOT INCLUDE:
• Vehicle repatriation if withdrawn from the race
• Travel costs
• Satellite phone rental (not mandatory)

Entry fee for additional assistance vehicles ranges from 2500 (car) to 35000 (semitruck) depending on the type of vehicle. There are several restrictions and requirements for assistance vehicles in terms of quantity and equipment.

The rest depends on what you already have (listed above) – is the car yours or you would like to rent one, do you have your own service crew or would like to hire one for the event, what spares you have, personal safety equipment etc.

Which cars are eligible for Dakar Classic?

Only 4 to 8-wheeled vehicles compliant with traffic regulations and for which a similar model took part in the Dakar Rally until the 1999 edition or any other rally raid held before 2000. However, the organiser reserves the right to select models that have never taken part in rally raids but are deemed historically relevant.

The minimum range of vehicles in the race is 350km, for safety reasons, an extra margin of 10% is required.
