This category features rally cars from the R4 and PROTO groups. The original R4 class was based on Group N regulations for production cars prior to 2013, and no new cars are homologated under Group N rules.

To replace the old R4, the FIA introduced the R4 Kit class. These kit cars feature a standardized engine, four-wheel drive powertrain, and suspension. In January 2017, French manufacturer ORECA was selected as the official supplier. The R4 Kit costs approximately €85,000 plus taxes and includes a 1.6L turbo engine producing 260 hp and 380 Nm, a 5-speed sequential gearbox, and chassis, engine, transmission, axle, brake, and fuel system modifications compared to the old N4 cars.

Classic Group R4 rally cars are based on N4 4WD 2.0L turbo production models with around 280 hp and a minimum weight of 1,300 kg. Typical examples include the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 8, EVO 9, EVO X, and Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

The new R4 – PROTO rally cars are built around 1.6L turbo engines producing 265 hp and 380 Nm, with a minimum weight of 1,230 kg. These cars fully comply with FIA safety specifications and offer performance just below that of R5 cars.
